Tanzania is no stranger to iconic safari experiences but Nyayo Discovery believes the people behind the destination deserve just as much attention as its wildlife.

Their tailor-made journeys combine game drives with opportunities to connect with local communities, from spending time with Indigenous groups and learning about traditional ways of life to exploring landscapes through the eyes of local guides who call them home.

Founded by wife and husband team, Lauren and John, Nyayo Discovery was created with a vision of using tourism to support both conservation and community development. Since 2007, they have worked closely with local communities, building long-term relationships that ensure tourism creates opportunities beyond the safari experience.

Today, they continue to partner with local guides, community initiatives and locally owned businesses to create journeys where travellers leave with a deeper understanding of Tanzania while helping more of tourism's benefits remain within local communities.

In this week’s What’s Hot & What’s Not, meet Moonika, the founder of Mon Mon Travel, who creates customised trips across Northern Europe.

Originally from Tallinn, Estonia, Moonika spent seven years living in Australia. These days, during the winter months, you'll usually find her in Rovaniemi, Finland. She loves the outdoors and enjoys exploring nature in all its forms, from Estonia's peaceful bogs and forests to the snow-covered landscapes of Lapland.

🔥 What’s Hot

Off-the-beaten-path locations, ethical husky and reindeer farms, home visits with locals, and experiences that support nature conservation during activities. Adult-only resorts or smaller private resorts, slow and relaxed travel, and “coolcation” trips outside winter season are also trending. Travellers are increasingly interested in Sami handicrafts, kuksa workshops, and buying directly from local artisans. There’s also a clear move toward avoiding crowded spots like Santa Claus Village, and instead focusing on quiet nature, local encounters, and taking things at an easy pace.

❄️ What’s Not

Mass tourism-style tours with little focus on sustainability, exploiting animals to cut costs, and anything that doesn’t respect nature or local practices. Walking on private property, leaving trash behind, and irresponsible behaviour in fragile environments are strongly discouraged. Renting a car in winter without proper driving skills is also a bad idea due to safety risks. Rovaniemi is becoming a very popular place with about 5 new resorts opening up each year. Locals don't think it's true Lapland any more and encourage people to explore other parts of Lapland for more authentic experience. Guaranteed Northern Lights hunting tours are often a scam - it's nature and can't be guaranteed.
