Brickyard Retreat

You wouldn’t expect to find a design hotel just steps from the Great Wall in a traditional village, but The Brickyard at Mutianyu is proof that sustainability and style can share the same view.

Once a glazed tile and brick factory, this place has been lovingly transformed into a space that celebrates local craftsmanship and community. Every corner whispers history, recycled tiles, hand-fired bricks and glass walls framing jaw-dropping views of the Great Wall itself.

The story began when the owners relocated to a tiny village of just 400 people, with roots tracing back to the Ming dynasty. After a meeting with the village mayor, they started this project that brought new life to the area, creating jobs and opportunities while preserving the village’s heritage.

Think mornings spent hiking quiet Wall trails, afternoons soaking in an open-air tub under fruit trees and evenings filled with farm-to-table meals featuring ingredients grown right on site.

What truly sets The Brickyard apart is their deep commitment to restoring the local village, employing residents and showing how thoughtful tourism can breathe life back into forgotten places.

Do red cars cost more to insure?

You may have heard the myth that red cars cost more to insure, often with varying reasons why. The truth is, the color of your car has nothing to do with your premium. Insurance companies are more interested in your vehicle’s make, model, age, safety features, and your driving history. What’s not a myth, though — is that people really can save a ton of money by switching insurers. Check out Money’s car insurance tool to see if you could, too.

In this week’s What’s Hot & What’s Not, meet Gabs, a sustainability communicator.

Gabs uses simple, relatable language to advocate for environmental protection, local community empowerment and sustainable living.

🔥 What’s Hot

Green is the new black-- regenerative travel, aka traveling to give something back is so in. Connecting with local communities, eating food you've never tasted before, experiencing wildlife at its most pristine, and of course, being part of the environmental movement by supporting conservation initiatives!

❄️ What’s Not

Outdated tourist traps, overcrowded destinations where people come just to take pictures without contributing to the maintenance of the area (uhm, looking at you Penida). Unethical wildlife tours (chasing marine species, elephant rides, dolphin shows) and gentrified areas where there are more tourists than locals.
