Batu Batu
📍 Pulau Tengah, Johor Marine Park, Malaysia
Website | Instagram | Google Maps
Tucked away on the off-grid island of Pulau Tengah, Batu Batu is a locally owned all-villa retreat where turquoise waters meet big conservation dreams. Built by local carpenters in the traditional Malay style, the resort weaves sustainability into every detail, from sourcing bamboo and batik from nearby artisans to growing produce in their own organic garden.
Your stay directly fuels Tengah Island Conservation, the on-site NGO that has released over 27,000 endangered sea turtles, restored coral reefs and seagrass beds, and safeguarded 85 km² of protected waters. Beyond nature, Batu Batu invests in people too, providing fair jobs, skills training, and empowering local communities to thrive.
As a founding member of the Malaysia Sustainable Tourism Network, the resort proves that tourism can regenerate ecosystems, empower people, and celebrate cultures.

In this week’s What’s Hot & What’s Not, meet Dale — a New Zealand–born software engineer turned digital nomad. Inspired by his well-traveled parents and sister, Dale knew early on that exploring the world was in his future. After a few years of living the nomad life, he’s learned firsthand what makes travel truly rewarding — and what makes it fall flat.

🔥 What’s Hot
Using the app Journey Pal to discover things around me and record where I've been. There's so much depth to the world and it's tough to really uncover all the history or things available in any given city, so using software tools to help discover that is super helpful.
Beyond that, I also love travelling to unique places. Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan were both super underrated. Great food, history and cultures I knew little about. A real adventure.
A reliable spare phone battery.
❄️ What’s Not
Scammers and tourist hotspots. I found so many common travel destinations had far more scammers than the more niche travel locations. Locals too seemed sick of tourists and it's super easy to interact exclusively with other travelers.
